21 JAN – CMDL Big Band – Tribute to THELONIOUS MONK

The CMDL Big Band has been exploring the enigmatic Thelonious Monk repertoire for a few months. Brilliant composer, exceptional musician, Monk began his career in New York in the 1940s at the heart of the “bebop revolution”. He distinguished himself from his contemporaries by a very singular sense of structure, time and harmony. “Pannonica”, “mid round midnight”, “evidence” are among his many compositions that have become standards. Today, he is recognized as one of the founders of modern jazz. Led by Stéphane Guillaume and Claude Egea, the students will offer a vision of Monk’s music through several arrangers (J.J. Johnson, Oliver Nelson, Bill Holman, Antoine Hervé …), from 1960s to the present day.
