Formed in 2019 by saxophonist and composer Olga Amelchenko, Helicon brings together some of the finest musicians from the Paris jazz scene: Charlotte Wassy on vocals, Enzo Carniel on piano, Viktor Nyberg on bass, and Nicolas Charlier on drums. The quintet draws inspiration from the works of poets Guillaume Apollinaire and Arthur Rimbaud, channeling their expressions of exaltation, melancholy, joy, and beauty.
Olga’s compositional approach goes beyond simply setting poetry to music. She meticulously analyzes the form and rhythm of each poem before crafting melodies, harmonies, and rhythmic patterns that reflect the unique essence of the text. This intricate process results in a seamless fusion where words and music intertwine, allowing contrasts and continuities to coexist harmoniously.
The group takes its name from Mount Helicon, a peak in Greek mythology revered as a source of poetic inspiration.
