MASTER Musicology and Contemporary Music Engineering

Initial formation

The MASTER Musicology and Contemporary Music Engineering course at CMDL allows:

  • provide students with a method of work enabling them to master instrumental technique and acquire a real artistic dimension,
  • Develop individual creativity and personnal projects,
  • acquire jazz’s culture and knowledge of the styles resulting from it by consolidating the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic concepts (improvisation, interpretation),
  • make students autonomous and thus be able to adapt to all professional situations.

 

Master leads to two diplomas :

Musicology master degree
The student in Master course follows his classes at the CMDL and at the University of Évry Val d’Essonne for the obtaining of his Master Musicology. He thus acquired a higher university level of knowledge and skills in jazz and improvised music. It strengthens its general culture and proficiency of information and communication technologies.

CMDL diploma
Le Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood awards the CMDL diploma to students with a general grade higher than 70% in exams. It certifies a high level of mastery in jazz and improvised music.

The formation takes place over two consecutive academic years (September to June), each of 30 calendar weeks, divided into six semesters.

 

Master’s student is register in two school :

  • le CMDL, where he receives almost all of his classes, three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday).
  • l’Université d’Évry Val d’Essonne, where he takes courses one day a week (Wednesday), to obtain his MIMAC master’s degree.

 

Master’s degree content :

The overall content of the training is organized in the following way, divided evenly between practical, theoretical, cultural and methodological courses:

À l’Université d’Evry Val d’Essonne – 1 day a week (Wednesday)
English and two musicology lessons.

Master’s degree leads to :

  • preparation for recruitment competitions for National Education at all levels but priority to CAPES and aggregation; speakers in different structures (CFMI, etc.); initiation to university musicological research
  • access to the professions of musical and artistic communication (journalism, criticism…) as well as to the professions of specialized libraries and mediatheques
  • professional artist
To take the MIMAC Master, the candidate must:
  • 1 copy of the diploma for access to foreign higher education (with sworn translation)
  • 1 copy of the foreign higher education diploma (with sworn translation)
  • 1 copy of the diploma or certificate of achievement for any foreign musical diploma (with sworn translation)
  • Must be at least 26 years old (31 December of the school year)
  • Not having interrupted his studies for more than 2 years.

     

The cost of the course is devided as follows:

3500 euros registration to the CMDL
+/- 240 euros registration at the University of Evry Val d’Essonne
+/- 95 euros from CVEC (Student Life and Campus Contribution)

About 3835 euros per year.

If you have limited resources, you may be eligible for a scholarship or financial support.

  •  Scholarships based on social criteria (BCS)

The aid is awarded according to three criteria: the income of the tax household, the number of children with tax burden of the family and the distance from the place of study. For more information, simulation and application for BCS scholarship, visit etudiant.gouv.fr

  •  Emergency help

The national emergency aid fund provides a rapid response to students’ precarious situations.

There are two types of specific support: one-off assistance for the student who is currently experiencing serious difficulties, or annual assistance to the student who is experiencing long-term difficulties.

FOR ALL CANDIDATES

  • 1 copy of one piece of identification, front/back

  • 1 Curriculum Vitae
  • The links for viewing your video recordings (in trio minimum): your interpretation of one of the ten imposed themes and a piece of your choice.
  • The scores of the 2 free songs, for the rhythm section (double bass, drums and piano and two scores for the jury), written with a software of musical scores (2 pages max. per piece).
  • 1 online payment will be requested, corresponding to the application fee of 70 euros

ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC CASES AND PAST EXPERIENCE

  • An academic certificate from your institution for the current year, if licensure (or equivalent) is expected in 2023
  • A copy of the licence or equivalent diploma
  • A copy of the transcript of the licence or equivalent diploma
  • A copy of the last transcript, if higher education in progress
  • A copy of the diploma obtained or the last transcript, if previous higher education
  • A copy of the certificate of attainment or education for all other previous musical training

FOR FOREIGN APPLICANTS

  • 1 copy of the diploma for access to foreign higher education (with sworn translation)
  • 1 copy of the foreign higher education diploma
  • 1 copy of the diploma or certificate of graduation for any foreign musical diploma

LIST OF THE 10 IMPOSED PIECES

When registering online, the applicant must provide links to watch video recordings. The candidate will have to play on these videos (in trio minimum) 1 free piece, as well as a piece chosen from the list of 10 imposed pieces.

The candidates invited to the admission tests will be subjected to the test «interpretation of standard without partition». On D-Day, each candidate will have to interpret without score the piece chosen by the jury, among the list of 10 imposed themes. He will be accompanied exclusively by the CMDL’s escorts, without any rehearsals beforehand.
