La Docteur Jazz Academy : une expérience artistique et pédagogique au CMDL
Led by musician and arranger Stan Laferrière, the Docteur Jazz Academy project offers students from conservatoires and higher music education institutions the opportunity to experience a professional-style musical project, from repertoire preparation to studio recording.
The programme is tailored to participants’ skill levels and includes a range of educational modules: the history of jazz applied to the repertoire, listening and analysis, phrasing and stylistic approaches, interpretation, harmony and arrangement writing. These learning activities allow students to deepen their musical understanding before putting their skills into practice during the recording sessions.
At CMDL, students took part in five days of work, including three days of rehearsals and two days of studio recording, for a project dedicated to Randy Weston and Melba Liston.
The aim is to create a fully-fledged artistic and educational project, resulting in an album as well as video content. The audio recordings will be available to download free of charge on the Docteur Jazz platform, and the videos will also be freely accessible online.
Following an initial project with the Maîtrise des Pays de la Loire in Angers, the initiative continued at CMDL. The Docteur Jazz Academy will soon visit the CNSMDP and work with the jazz department in Clermont-Ferrand, with the shared goal of passing on the jazz tradition through practice, creativity and collective musical experience.
